This QR facelift, combining the designs of Louis Vuitton with Takashi Murakami, is something worth a look. This may be the first designer QR code ever.
Jean Snow says the stylized QR code works like the standard, barcode-like graphics, while Dvice adds that its the first time Takashi Murakami’s work has been interactive. Created by Japanese ad firm SET, the project is mostly just to promote other work the two companies have done together. But the creativity factor can’t be denied. It’s pretty neat.
Found this this article from LAWeekly. They wrote:
“In the early morning hours in mid-December, an amazing masterpiece of epic pink proportions appeared above the Melrose strip. Not MOCA’s Murakami billboard itself, but rather a young curator’s fantasy art show: “Murakami/AUGER/REVOK.” The spectacle lasted two days, and then it was gone. For most of us who missed it entirely, the billboard became art-opening gossip - already a mythic achievement - and yet another coup pulled off by a couple of L.A.’s most prolific and talented AWR/MSK writers. Luckily, REVOK carried his camera that day, and L.A. Weekly received the photo; we were wowed. So, it turns out, was Murakami, whose Kaikai Kiki studio found the evidence via the Internet and had the billboard surreptitiously removed. Murakami buffing billboards all the way from Japan? On the contrary, according to his representatives, he found it “so wonderful, he had to have it for his collection.” Our billboard is now on its way to Tokyo.”
Great book of all the art on exhibit at MOCA. I believe it is $65 for this giant book at MOCA but I am pretty sure you can find a good price at Amazon (Murakami Book)
Many of you have asked if I have a collection of the Super Flat Museum figures. I happen to have the whole collection displayed on my wall. Some figures are missing because they did not fit in the case. Enjoy!
I’m sure many of you have seen Kanye West’s Graduation album cover art done by Murakami. However, there is one more collectible art piece that I just picked up and looks amazing framed. It is the import LP for “Stronger” single. It has a front and back as well! Very hard to find.
Playing off yesterday’s crazy eBay auctions, I did find another beautiful piece of art. No, it’s not a poster but the place mat from the Takashi Murakami VIP reception at MOCA in Los Angeles. Scrounged around some more and found an interesting article in the LA Times too from November 2, 2007. Apparently at the reception party there were droves of place mat stealers on the prowl at the party. They stole anyone’s place mat that wasn’t paying attention. I am sure Kanye had his place mat on lockdown.
Nonetheless, where did all these placemats end up going? EBay of course! Auctions for this wonderful piece of history are gong for around $300-$400. Now if I had just gone to the VIP reception I could have got myself a $300 placemat too. Forget the fact that the entrance fee that night was around $5k. Maybe I’ll find some hipster eating off this placemat in Larchmont somewhere too.
